In a perplexing limitation, users of Threads, the competitor app launched by Meta, are unable to delete their Threads account independently without also deleting their entire Instagram account. However, there is a glimmer of hope as Meta, the parent company of Instagram, has acknowledged the issue and is actively working towards decoupling Threads from Instagram accounts. This development was announced by Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, in a recent post on Thursday.
Threads, designed as a direct competitor to Twitter, relies on Instagram’s account system, allowing users to seamlessly transfer their Instagram usernames to Threads upon joining the app. While this integration facilitates a smooth transition, it also creates a dependency between the two applications, making it impossible for users to delete their Threads account without sacrificing their Instagram account. This limitation may dissuade individuals who have invested years into their Instagram presence and wish to retain their content.
According to Mosseri’s announcement, Meta is actively exploring a solution to enable users to delete their Threads account without affecting their Instagram account. However, no specific timeline has been provided for the availability of this feature. In the meantime, Mosseri suggests an alternative approach for users. They can choose to hide their Threads profile and content by deactivating their Threads account. This can be done by navigating to the profile tab, tapping the settings icon (represented by two lines), selecting “Account,” choosing “Deactivate profile,” and then clicking the “Deactivate Threads profile” button. It is important to note that deactivating the Threads profile is a temporary measure, as reactivating the account upon login will restore the hidden profile, threads, replies, and likes, as explained on an Instagram support page. Mosseri also highlights the option to delete individual posts or set the account to private for additional control.
Threads was recently launched by Instagram on iOS and Android, quickly amassing over 30 million sign-ups, as reported by Mark Zuckerberg. However, the app was seemingly rushed to market to capitalize on the ongoing turbulence at Twitter, resulting in certain key features missing from its initial release. Direct messages (DMs), a following feed, and hashtags are notably absent. Mosseri acknowledged this in a separate post, mentioning that these “basic” features are already in the pipeline but cautioned that their implementation will require some time.
As Meta works towards resolving the limitation of deleting Threads profiles independently, users can follow the suggested steps for deactivation or explore other account management options offered by Instagram. The community eagerly anticipates the upcoming improvements and the ultimate decoupling of Threads from Instagram accounts.
